What we like

  • +Excellent video quality — up to 4K on Pro models
  • +Strong AI: person, vehicle, animal detection
  • +30 days free cloud storage included (Essential cameras)
  • +Long battery life — months between charges
  • +Works without subscription at a basic level
  • +Local storage via SmartHub (sold separately)

⚠️ Watch out for

  • Premium pricing for hardware
  • SmartHub required for local storage — extra upfront cost
  • Best AI features require Arlo Secure subscription
  • NZ pricing can be significantly higher than US RRP
  • Battery cameras still miss first 1–2 seconds of motion

Arlo occupies an interesting position in the NZ market: better video quality than Ring, more flexible smart home integration, and a genuinely useful free cloud storage tier — but with lower retail availability and a higher upfront price.

For NZ homeowners who prioritise video quality and want basic recording without a subscription, Arlo is often the best fit. For those who want the simplest possible setup with the widest local availability, Ring is easier to access.

Arlo product range in NZ

Essential Series (no hub required)

Arlo Essential (2nd Gen) — Arlo's most renter-friendly and accessible camera. 100% wire-free, weather-rated, connects directly to Wi-Fi. Includes 30 days of free cloud storage. 1080p video, motion detection, two-way audio. Available with or without a colour night vision LED.

Arlo Essential XL — Same as Essential but with a larger battery for extended runtime (up to 12 months per charge with typical use).

Arlo Essential Indoor — Indoor-only, plug-in variant. Includes a privacy shutter that physically blocks the lens when the camera is disarmed.

Arlo Essential Video Doorbell — 1080p doorbell camera with a wider-than-typical aspect ratio that also captures the area below the lens (useful for seeing packages at your feet). Free 30-day cloud storage. Available in battery and wired versions.

Pro Series (SmartHub recommended)

Arlo Pro 5S — Arlo's flagship wireless camera. 2K HDR video, colour night vision, integrated spotlight, 12x digital zoom, SmartHub compatible for local storage. Best video quality in Arlo's wireless lineup. The SmartHub unlocks local USB storage as a backup to cloud.

Arlo Pro 4 — 2K video, colour night vision, direct Wi-Fi connection (no SmartHub required). Good balance of quality and simplicity.

Ultra Series

Arlo Ultra 2 — 4K HDR video, wider field of view, built-in spotlight. Arlo's top-tier camera, priced accordingly. Overkill for most NZ home installations but delivers exceptional resolution for licence plate capture when correctly positioned.

Arlo Secure subscription plans

| Plan | Monthly (approx NZD) | Cameras | Video History | Key Features | |------|---------------------|---------|---------------|--------------| | Free | $0 | Up to 5 | 30 days | Motion recording, basic alerts | | Arlo Secure (1 camera) | ~NZ$7 | 1 | 30 days | Person/vehicle/package detection, activity zones | | Arlo Secure (unlimited) | ~NZ$18 | Unlimited (1 location) | 30 days | All cameras, e911 emergency response | | Arlo Secure Plus | ~NZ$28 | Unlimited | 30 days | 24/7 professional monitoring |

Important NZ note: Arlo subscription pricing is charged in USD. The NZD amounts above are approximate. Arlo's free tier is permanent — not a trial — for Arlo Essential models.

For NZ homeowners with 1–3 Arlo cameras who only need motion recording (not AI detection), the free tier is often sufficient. Upgrade to Arlo Secure when you want person/package detection to reduce false alerts from pets, cars, and wind.

What Arlo does well

Free cloud storage. Arlo's 30-day free tier is real and permanent. If you have 1–3 cameras and just want to know if someone approached your property, the free tier covers that. This is a meaningful advantage over Ring, where recording requires a paid subscription.

Video quality. Arlo Essential (1080p) is sharper than Ring Stick Up Cam at the same price point. The Pro 5S (2K) and Ultra 2 (4K) are among the best video quality in consumer wireless cameras. Colours are more accurate and HDR handling is noticeably better in high-contrast lighting conditions.

Smart home compatibility. Arlo works with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. This is a genuine differentiator — Ring only works well with Alexa, and Eufy's HomeKit support is incomplete. If you're in a Google or Apple ecosystem, Arlo is the best wireless camera option.

Renter-friendly design. Arlo Essential cameras are designed for easy relocation. The magnetic mount is one of the fastest to attach/detach in the category — camera removal takes about 5 seconds.

Battery life. Arlo Essential XL and Pro 5S have among the best battery life in consumer wireless cameras, reducing maintenance frequency.

Arlo's honest limitations

NZ retail availability. Arlo's physical retail presence in NZ is limited compared to Ring. You may need to order online, which makes in-person purchase/return harder. Check stock before committing, particularly for the SmartHub and Pro series.

SmartHub adds cost and complexity. To use local storage with Pro cameras, you need the Arlo SmartHub (~NZ$130–150). This adds upfront cost and a device to manage. Arlo Essential cameras avoid this, but then you're entirely cloud-dependent.

AI detection requires subscription. Person, vehicle, and package detection all require Arlo Secure. On the free tier, you get motion alerts only — which means more false alerts from pets, wind, and passing cars.

App experience. Arlo's app is functional but slightly less polished than Ring's. Some users report occasional connection delays when opening live view. This has improved in recent firmware updates but Ring still has a slight edge in app responsiveness.

Price. Arlo cameras are generally 10–20% more expensive than Ring equivalents at launch, and the Pro series cameras are significantly more expensive than Ring's equivalent tier.

Who Arlo is right for

Arlo makes the most sense for NZ homeowners who:

  • Want basic recording without any subscription (free tier users)
  • Use Google Home or Apple HomeKit
  • Prioritise video quality over ecosystem simplicity
  • Are renting and want maximum portability
  • Are building a 2–3 camera setup and want to avoid monthly fees

Who should look elsewhere

If you're deeply invested in Amazon Alexa, Ring's ecosystem integration is tighter. If you want zero subscription and don't want to rely on cloud storage at all, Eufy with HomeBase is a better fit. If you need whole-property coverage with evidence-grade driveway footage, a PoE/NVR system is more appropriate than any wireless camera.

💡

For NZ renters: The Arlo Essential (2nd Gen) is purpose-built for your situation — battery-only, magnetic mount, 30 days of free cloud storage included. It's the camera we most commonly recommend to renters who ask about a no-fuss, low-cost starting point.
